Rooting out a cable problem

WHAT'S more important, a phone line or a tree?

Malcolm Stuart reckons his cable should come first. Last August it snapped after scrapping against a branch for months.

It was replaced free by BT, but since then he's been trying to have the tree pruned, in the knowledge the problem will only happen again.

Mr Stuart, aged 67, of Bowden Wood Place, Darnall, said: "BT said the cable could be moved to another pole but it would cost 300. No one is willing to tackle the tree."

ACTION

SHEFFIELD Homes, which owns the tree, has agreed to remove the offending branch.

Brigitt Cowen, Sheffield Homes manager, said: "We have asked our Community Tree Officer to carry out the necessary works to prevent damage to the telephone line.

"We will also liaise with BT to try to re-site this line to prevent a further recurrence of this issue."
