Robert's staying chipper after bagging eco business idea
FOR years chip shop owners have faced a problem of how to get shut of their spud peelings. This week, which just so happens to be National Chip Week, the owner of one Sheffield chippy has come up with an idea... and it might just help save the planet.
Robert Pearce, who owns and runs Woodseats Fisheries in Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, is having his peelings turned into biodegradable bags.
He reckons the bags are a much greener way to take home your fish and chips or other takeaway treats.
There's just one problem - his bags aren't as cheap as chips, as Robert explains.
He said: "Following The Star's new year campaign to recycle and re-use we decided to source a more eco friendly carrier bag as we currently give away 4,000 plastic ones a month.
"We found one which can be made from potato starch. How novel is that in a chip shop?
"The problem is the cost. They are 144 plus vat per thousand. That makes them 16p each and I can't afford to give them away so I have to pass the cost on."
Robert is now asking what is more important to his customers - the credit crunch or the environment?
