Roads closed by Sheffield club blaze - YOUR PICTURES & VIDEO

FIREFIGHTERS tackling a huge blaze at a disused club on the outskirts of Sheffield city centre were today forced to retreat after discovering hydrochloric acid inside the burning building.

For in depth report, reaction and more photos see The Star tomorrow, Tuesday, Junbe 8, 2010.

Emergency crews were unsure how much of the chemical is in the building, but for safety reasons moved further away from the blaze.

They also asked police to closed one side of Netherthorpe Road - the dual carriageway heading towards the Brook Hill roundabout.

The fire was reported at St Philips Social Club and Institute on Daisy Walk, Netherthorpe, at 3.30am, and when crews arrived flames were around 40 metres high.

Residents in the Atlantic One flats complex on Radford Street were evacuated from their homes by the police because of the amount of smoke billowing towards their block.

The plume of thick black smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles, with motorists heading into Sheffield along the Parkway even affected by it.

The city centre was filled with a smell of smoke as early morning workers and commuters arrived.

At the height of the blaze there were nine appliances at the blaze, with around 40 firefighters surrounding the building to douse the flames with powerful water jets.

An aerial ladder platform was also used to tackle the flames from above.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.

The disused, boarded-up building is expected to be searched by firefighters once the firefighting and damping down operation is complete, if the building is declared safe to enter.

Police closed a number of roads in the area to keep motorists and pedestrians away.

They included Netherthorpe Road, Radford Street, Meadow Street.
