Schools, churches, GP surgeries and businesses are being warned to be on their guard against bogus callers posing as road maintenance contractors.
Derbyshire County Council has received complaints about men claiming to be from a company employed to repaint road markings.
Companies and community venues have been targeted by rogue traders who ask for money to pay for markings outside their property.
The scammers produce a fake letter from the county council which they claim gives them permission to do the work.
Deputy leader Coun Simon Spencer, said: “We want to warn local people that we would never call door to door asking for money or ask anyone else to do so on our behalf.
“This is not genuine – it is a scam and people should not hand over any money to these conmen.”
Anyone who is approached by these people should call Consumer Direct on 08454 040505. If anyone feels threatened they should call the police.
