A street in Shiregreen is one of the first in Sheffield to be resurfaced under the 2 billion Streets Ahead contract to repair crumbling roads and footpaths.

WORK is set to begin on repairs to crumbling roads and footpaths in two more areas of Sheffield in the New Year - with 19 zones of the city set for completion during 2013.

The Effingham area of Attercliffe and the Manor Estate are the latest areas set to benefit from the £2 billion project.

Contractor Amey has been hard at work in Shiregreen, Ewden and Carbrook, where work is due for completion by the end of the year.

Work has already been announced in Wisewood and Walkley for January.

A further 15 zones have been revealed where resurfacing of footpaths and roads, and replacement of lighting, will take place.

Coun Jack Scott, Sheffield Council cabinet member for environment, recycling and streetscene, said: “I’m really pleased that we are picking up the pace with this exciting project. We know from work that has been completed so far in areas such as Shiregreen that it makes a massive difference.

“There will be disruption while work is carried out but it is worth it in the end.”

Graeme Symonds, network director for contractor Amey, said: “We’re committed to carrying out these works in the most effective and efficient way possible, trying not to interfere with day to day activity as much as we can.

“We are keen to hear from businesses and residents about how we can accommodate their needs.”

A roadshow about the project will take place on Wednesday, December 12, at The Mega Centre, Bernard Road, between 2pm and 6pm, to inform residents and businesses about the planned works for Effingham.

On Thursday, December 13, the Streets Ahead team will be at Sign Post - formerly the Steel Inn - Harborough Avenue, Manor Park, between 2pm and 6pm, with the plans for the Manor Estate.

At the roadshow, residents and businesses will be able to find out what works will be taking place in the area, which roads will be affected, when the works will start and end, and speak to experts from Amey about how they will carry out the works.

The planned works will also be on display at the SYAC Building, The Wicker, between December 18 and 20.
