Ricky Gervais at Sheffield City Hall - REVIEW
CRUDE, rude, offensive and objectionable.
But brilliantly funny.
Ricky Gervais has probably been the hottest comedy property on the planet for the last five years and there are those who say the backlash is about to hit.
This Science tour – which has almost zero science in it – has had distinctly mixed reviews since it took to the road in August.
But on the evidence at Sheffield City Hall last night Ricky's still doing it right. The 2,000-plus that braved the South Yorkshire cold and rain to get there were soon into their stride.
If you are a Gervais fanatic and you have followed every show, film, podcast and interview you will no doubt have heard some of this material before.
That's hardly the point.
The act is what you would expect from the man who wrote The Office and Extras – embarrassing, shocking, non-PC and hilarious.
The bit of him that actually is David Brent can be smug: "There's a recession on is there? Someone told me about it, what's it been like?" – but that's the idea.
If you go to see Ricky Gervais regularly and want new material every week you might be disappointed.
But like chocolate Hob-Nobs and heroin, he's a bit more-ish.
Speaking the unspeakable and saying the one thing you must NOT say has always been at the root of the Gervais gift.
That still drives him on and if you can hear the cogs turning sometimes as the punchline approaches that's all right because it's still a shock when it gets there.
The 80-minute show was no Ken Dodd-length performance but a packed City Hall lapped it up.
Ricky still rules.
