Richard Hawley sings praises of Sheffield's musical heritage
SINGER-SONGWRITER Richard Hawley has given his backing to his home city's bid to be named England's Most Musical City.
The Arts Council has selected Sheffield to do battle against nine others for the title of Most Musical City and Coles Corner crooner Hawley is spearheading Sheffield's campaign to win the public's vote.
The city faces competition from Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Colchester, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Newcastle.
The campaign to find the Most Musical City was launched by the Arts Council's Take it Away scheme, which makes musical instruments affordable and accessible for all.
People can register their support and vote by logging on to mostmusicalcity.co.uk.
Mary Wright of the Arts Council England said: "Sheffield is prolific in its music-making and a hotbed of creativity.
"We're thrilled that Sheffield is representing Yorkshire to compete for Most Musical City."
Ann Gosse, Sheffield Council's director of culture, added: ""Any night of the week you can enjoy an enviable choice of live music in one of the city's many venues.
"Without a doubt Sheffield deserves to win the official title of England's Most Musical City."
