Residents protest over traffic pollution

CONCERNED residents confronted motorists making their morning commute into Sheffield to urge them to cut their car use.

People living in Tinsley waved placards beside the roundabout at junction 34 of the M1 to protest.

The spot is one of the most polluted in the city due to the high volume of traffic and locals are concerned about its impact on residents' health - with pollution blamed for respiratory problems.

Some of the residents also brought along devices to record the amount of exhaust fumes in the atmosphere.

Yesterday's protest was the first of three.

The second is being held today, outside St Mary's Church, Handsworth Road, Handsworth, and a third is at the junction of Greenland Road and Main Road, Darnall, tomorrow.

Both are happening between 8am and 9am.
