Two climbers were seriously injured on Stanage Edge near Hathersage when a 25-year-old woman fell, pulling off her companion, her 53-year-old uncle.
The young climber sustained a fractured pelvis and multiple facial fractures, while her uncle sustained a head injury and a fracture in his lower back from the fall on Martello Buttress. Members of Edale and Glossop Mountain Rescue Teams were diverted from providing safety cover for the flypast of Lancaster bombers at Derwent.
Other climbers on the crag abandoned their own climbs to help with the delicate task of getting the injured to two separate air ambulances, one on the top of the edge and one near the car park. “Their assistance was really valuable,” said an Edale team spokesperson.
