Remploy jobs threat

TRADE unions fear 90 jobs at Remploy’s Sheffield factory could be at risk - despite plans to sell the company’s furniture division as a going concern.

The Brightside Lane plant is one of three nationwide which manufactures furniture.

But Remploy’s accountants KPMG have said the furniture business must be ‘significantly restructured’ to be viable.

James Stribley, GMB organiser for Remploy, said: “We’ve been told that the business could be reduced to just one site and Sheffield could close.

“Even where factories have been sold there have been substantial job losses.

“At Chesterfield, which makes surgical implants, half the jobs were lost.”

Mr Stribley said the union is lobbying Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts to support the staff and protect jobs.
