REMEMBRANCE Sunday commemorations will take place at the York and Lancaster Regimental Memorial in Sheffield’s Weston Park as well as at the main civic event in Barker’s Pool.

Dozens of veterans from the former regiment, plus soldiers from the current Yorkshire Regiment, cadets and members of Sheffield University Officer Training Corps will attend from 10.30am on Sunday. Proceedings will be led by Canon Christopher Burke of Sheffield Cathedral, a former chaplain in the TA.

Meanwhile, Sheffield University Students’ Union has started selling white poppies as well as the traditional red ones. White poppies ‘remember all those whose lives have been lost and destroyed by war, and aim to promote a culture of peace’.

n A REMEMBRANCE Day service is to be held in Wombwell on Sunday at St Mary’s Church starts at 10.15am. Wreaths will be laid outside, where there will be a two minute silence at 11am.
