Recollections of city's best dressed men

I WAS fortunate enough, as a young man between 1966 and 1967 to have the singular privilege to be employed by Sheffield's number one bespoke tailor, Barney Goodman, at his shop in Cambridge Arcade, off Pinstone Street.

In the 1970s, this area was extensively redeveloped and no longer exists, except in memory.

Mr Goodman was a much admired and respected businessman and iconic character, particularly in the field of high class gentlemen's outfitting and was, without doubt, one of the region's finest tailors. His apparel, especially his made-to-measure suits were the very epitome and essence of high quality workmanship.

You could spot someone wearing one of his creations at 100 yards, so distinctive were they. The cut and styling was truly unique and absolutely superb.

For any fashion conscious man who appreciated quality and wished to impress, a Barney Goodman suit was an investment and badge of taste and distinction.

When I see the suits and jackets of today worn by prominent people, politicians, dignitaries, TV and film stars etc, I cringe and have to stifle a laugh when compared with the elegance of his work which, in my opinion, surpassed that of even Savile Row.

I clearly remember all the special people with whom I had the pleasure of working, all extremely gifted, dedicated, professionals, including the venerable Mr Birks, the head cutter; the tailors' 'Manchester man' Tony and Trevor with his dry sense of humour; the salesmen Barry and Jud who was, perhaps, the best-dressed man in town.

To me this was a memorable and happy time and I thank my old colleagues for letting me share the privilege of their company.
