Reading drive

MORE than 250 volunteers have been recruited to help Sheffield pupils improve their reading, as part of a city-wide drive to boost standards of education.

Since the launch of the council's Pledge For Success campaign in January, over 160 people have come forward to work in primary schools to help youngsters prepare for their end of year tests.

A further 80 people have been recruited to act as reading volunteers from businesses or other organisations, while 28 council employees have also been signed up bringing the total there to 100.

Pledge For Success is seeking the backing of both individuals and businesses, public sector bodies like the police and health service, the voluntary sector and council departments - with 370 commitments made to date.

The target is to achieve 1,250 pledges by March next year, including a team of over 500 reading volunteers working in schools.

The campaign has also been successful in recruiting more than 240 new school governors - the target is to find 350.

Pledge For Success is one of the new LibDem council's flagship strategies to help tackle underachievement in Sheffield schools, and to narrow the gap with national pass rates.
