YOU’VE got to hand it to the Chinese – they really know how to celebrate their New Year in style.
And thanks to Sheffield Chinese Association everybody else gets to share in the experience of one of the most vibrant cultural gatherings in the city.
Around 200 children and the only golden dragon in town were at the heart of the spectacular festivities at King Edward VII Lower School, home to the area’s oldest Chinese community organisation. The 18 metre mythical beast danced alongside sparkly lions as the Year of the Rabbit was ushered in.
Paul Cheung, head teacher of the Chinese school which teaches Mandarin and Cantonese as part of the Association’s activities, said: “The show features traditional costumes and tells the story of the significance of the rabbit. The Association moved to the school in 2001 and has strong links with the community, particularly through this celebration.”
