VOLUNTEERS involved in wildlife and environmental activities at a Sheffield nature reserve have received certificates of thanks.

Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Sylvia Dunkley, carried out the presentation to members of Shirebrook Valley Watch Group, which has closed after five years.

Chris Smith, Sheffield Council countryside ranger, said: “The event celebrated the efforts and enthusiasm of the volunteers, including adults and young people, who have supported the group.

“The event provided an opportunity to exchange stories from the past and find out what people are doing now.”

Chris said that over the years when the group used to meet, it gave youngsters the chance to learn about their local environment and creatures living there, ranging from birds to bats, fish and spiders.
