Rail tunnels to re-open in cycling plans

CYCLISTS will get better access to the Peak District National Park if plans to re-open four railway tunnels between Buxton and Matlock are approved.

The 400m-long tunnels, which were closed in the 1960s, will make way for a 3.785m trail for cyclists, walkers and horse riders on the Monsal Trail. They would also connect the cycle routes at HIgh Peak and Tissington Trails.

The Department of Transport is contributing 1m to the project and Cycling UK has promised a donation of 1.25m.

The service committee of Peak District National Park Authority will consider the case later this month. If approved, work on the project will start in early 2010.
