Rail services back on track after blaze

RAIL services between Sheffield and Meadowhall were back on track this afternoon after being halted when a gas cylinder caught fire on a city street.

Fire crews were called to Electric Melting Services at Lovell Street, Attercliffe, at 10.15am after reports that an acetylene gas cylinder had momentarily caught fire and was at risk of exploding.

Because of the ferocity of fires involving the gas if they take hold, train services between Sheffield and Meadowhall were halted as a precaution.

But they resumed normal service at around 12.40pm.

A number of streets, including Attercliffe Road and Princess Street, were also closed after a cordon was erected around the scene while there was still a risk of the cylinder exploding.

They re-opened at around 2.45pm when firefighters, who had a water jet permanently trained on the cylinder to cool it, returned to their station.

Last week roads in the same area were closed for 24 hours after a major blaze broke out at the Fusion car showroom on Lovell Street.
