IT was full steam ahead as train enthusiasts from across northern England gathered for the annual Sheffield Model Railway Exhibition.

Up to two thousand people - young and old - came to Sheffield for the two-day event at Birkdale School in Broomhill.

The exhibition, one of the largest club-organised exhibitions in the region, boasted 20 railway layouts with many brought by visiting clubs and individuals.

The designs ranged from tiny displays to massive 30-foot long layouts.

Exhibition manager Kevin Rayworth, aged 62, said: “It has been a very successful weekend, we’ve had people coming steadily through.

Mr Rayworth is a member of Sheffield Model Railway Enthusiasts, which meets at Carter Knowle Methodist Church rooms in Edgedale Road every Tuesday and Thursday evening.
