QUAKE SPECIAL: Star readers rocked by tremor
The Star was inundated with emails from readers who felt the quake:
Sam Bailey lives in Firth Park, Sheffield, and said: "I was in bed and woke up to my bed shaking.
"I jumped out of bed and turned on the lights and the floor was shaking, lasted about 5 seconds.
"I was scared and didn't know what was happening. I couldn't sleep after that."
The Senior family, living in Wadlsey, said: "The tremor (at 12.54 am on my clock), woke my husband and I and both our two sons. I thought the roof was going to cave in - all our beds shook.
"We all jumped out of bed and realised that it must have been some sort of earthquake, but it was very scary."
Paula Doman from Wincobank said: "I felt it and I live in Wincobank.
"It was about 12.50am when it happened when I was getting my little boy back to sleep as he is unwell.
"At first I thought it was a plane crashing but there was no noise. It was dreadfully frightening.
"Luckily, my little boy was asleep so he did not mention it. But I felt it and it really scared me."

Lord Mayor of Sheffield Cllr Arthur Dunworth said: "At 1am I heard an almighty bang. Sounded like a chimney collapsing.
"Got out of bed, looked around the front of the house, then the back. No sign of anything. Back to bed, wondering. That said, not a novelty following many a Council meeting!"
Robert Johnson said: "We were in Greece last year and had two earthquakes, one was 5.8 and one was 3.5, but last night was equally as bad if not worse!
"Everything in the house shook and a couple of photos fell from the wall."
Adam Green, of Horninglow Road said: "At about 1.20am this morning there was quite a vigorous earth tremor in Firth Park Sheffield the house was shaking at least four inches from side to side and things were rolling."
Zoe Thompson in Sheffield said: "I felt and heard the tremor this morning.
"It happened at about 12.55am it was very scary.
"I was just on my way to bed and the whole house started to shake violently side to side and I heard a really loud rumble which lasted for about 10 seconds.
"I had no idea what it was at first so I went outside and a few of my neighbour's lights were coming on - at that point we realised it must have been an earthquake. I was very scared and shaken by it all."
Kay Melia of Ranby Road, Greystones, said: "At 1am on the house was shaking for about five seconds - did anyone else in sheffield experience the same?"
Janet, from Maltravers Road, Wybourn, said: "Bit of excitement at 1am, it started with a rumbling sound which steadily got louder then the bed and wardrobe started shaking.
"At first I thought the gable end or the chimney stack was coming down because of high winds.
"I went to see if there was any damage and noticed lights coming on up and down the street. A few people came out, then it dawned on us it must have been an earth tremor - dead scary at first."
"Hello my name is Janet from Sheffield and I am contacting you to say that at 12.50am this morning my whole house began to shake as though there was an earth tremor."
D Cammack in Rotherham said: "I just want to report about an earthquake at 1am early Wednesday morning that lasted three to four seconds. I was sat at my computer, when the house began to shake.
"At first I thought it was just me feeling very tired, however I noticed my computer desk, lights and my cup of coffee shaking.
"This is my first experience of an earthquake."
Ian Beck of Norwood Place, Killamarsh, said: "An earthquake or what seems like one shook the house at 1am, no damage seems to have been done but lights have gone on all over the estate."
Rob Witheford, of Barnsley Road, Sheffield said: "I don't know what anyone else experienced at 1am on the morning of Wednesday 27 February but while I was in bed trying to sleep the house completely shook.
"Maybe a tornado or earthquake? It scared the family."
Susi Miller said: "Have you heard any news about tremors in Pitsmoor? We live on Rock Street and just felt a tremor that lasted a few minutes shaking the house a little.
"When I looked outside I saw a couple of other people looking out of the window across the road so I think others heard it also."
Julie Oates from Gleadless Valley said: "I was watching TV and I assumed it was the wind that shook the house but my whole family was literally shaken out of bed by the impact."
Martyn Sherman from Dore described the impact as "significant". He added: "It was strong here, the whole room shook for three to four seconds."
John Lucas from Sheffield Lane Top said: "It felt like there were two animals fighting under my bed. I didn't know what was going on."
Jamil Ali in Sheffield said: "I woke up and the first thing I thought was that there were a load of burglars in the house.
"The kids were screaming and so was my wife. It was that violent you actually moved yourself."
