Pupils learn road safety

YOUNGSTERS at a Barnsley school had road safety messages driven home to them by police officers who turned up to their classroom with their sirens sounding.

Police Community Support Officers from the Royston Safer Neighbourhood Team took their cars to Athersley North Primary School to let youngsters have a look inside after listening to a presentation given by PCSO Ian Armitage.

He said: "The important message we wanted the kids to take away was to reinforce the 'stop, look and listen' understanding. We wanted to stress the importance of crossing the roads with the supervision of an adult."

Headteacher Margaret Newcombe said: "The children enjoyed the spectacle of the police car and having the chance to look inside."
