PUPILS from a Sheffield primary school helped declare a new supermarket officially open - by cutting the ribbon and even helping shoppers to pack their groceries at the tills.

The new Asda, which used to be Netto, has reopened on City Road, Manor Top.

Young pupils from Prince Edward Primary School cut a green tape to signifiy the supermarket was open - and then went inside the store to help customers pack their shopping away in bags.

Some even acted as supervisors for the day, helping direct customers to appropriate aisles.

As a thank-you they were given a £50 store voucher. Teacher Hilary French said: “It was an honour to be asked to open the store and the pupils really enjoyed themselves.”

Store manager Mark Tankard said: “We wanted to celebrate the opening of our store with the local community which was the idea behind inviting the school.”
