Pupils' interest in community blossoms
A SHEFFIELD suburb is exploding into a cavalcade of colour just in time for the summer months - with a little help from schoolchildren.
Sacred Heart and Rivelin primary pupils have been working with Hillsborough Forum on a range of projects to boost the area's contribution to the Sheffield in Bloom contest.
Around 25 entries to the competition have come from the Hillsborough area and schools have been playing their part by creating hanging baskets, planting fruit trees in the playground and growing vegetables.
Forum spokeswoman Wendy Wells, who is helping to co-ordinate the work, said: "We want to encourage and help people of all ages to get involved in our own Hillsborough in Bloom contribution.
"Projects like the Garden Club at Rivelin Primary are really important to involve young people in caring about their local environment."
Hillsborough Forum has also successfully raised money this year to pay for plants in the local shopping centre, while the city council has agreed after requests from the Forum to repaint Walkley Lane bridge.
Entries to the competition have come from Hillsborough businesses, schools and churches as well as individuals putting forward their gardens.
Forum member Nick Waterfield said: "The area had real success in the Lord Mayor's awards last year with winners in a number of categories.
"The Cupola Gallery and Sacred Heart School are hoping for success again this year. The spring judging of In Bloom seemed to go well in Hillsborough, and so we hope everyone will make an effort to be ready for the summer judging on July 16."
