Punishment for Sheffield bus spit attack culprits

TWO pupils have been excluded from a Sheffield school - after subjecting a woman to a degrading ordeal on a crowded bus.

Silverdale School, Bents Green, took action against the pair responsible for the attack on Alex Devine, from Walkley.

The 21-year-old was travelling on a crowded number 88 bus, and was jammed into a space at the bottom of the stairs, when teenagers on the top deck tried to spit down her top and shouted lewd comments to her.

Mike Pollard, deputy head at Silverdale School, said: “As soon as the school reopened after the Easter holiday we held an assembly and police schools liaison officer, PC Tom Goodhill, came in and spoke to students.

“As a result, a number of people came forward.

“We were quickly able to identify the culprits.”

Mr Pollard said the excluded pair will be allowed back only under certain conditions, and after meetings are held with their parents.

He added the school is also holding a meeting with bus company Stagecoach to agree procedure for bus managers to report future incidents to the school straightaway.

Ms Devine said: “The officer dealing with this has been to the school and resolved the issues. The school has also been brilliant even though it wasn’t done on school property or in school time. I’m very happy with the outcome of it.”

PC Goodhill said: “I am planning to use this case to help with future citizenship classes for youngsters at schools.”
