Proud day for county's parks with a raft of quality awards

Parks in South Yorkshire have scooped 24 prestigious awards for the quality of their upkeep and management.

The prizes, announced today, include the Green Flag Award - the national standard for parks in the UK - and the Green Pennants award, given to parks or green spaces managed by a community or voluntary group.

Sheffield was handed the most awards of any city or town in Yorkshire and Humberside, scooping 19 gongs. In Rotherham three parks were honoured, as well as one each from Barnsley and Doncaster.

Andrew Stunell MP, communities and local government minister, said: "The record number of Green Pennants awarded to local people showing what people can do for themselves in their local area is an amazing achievement.

"I congratulate the park managers, park wardens and the volunteers for their success and thank them for their hard work to create urban green places that people enjoy. The increase in the number of applications and winners this year is a very good sign of the big society to come."

Sheffield's 13 Green Flag Awards went to the Cholera Monument Grounds and Clay Wood, Botanical Gardens, Devonshire Green, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Heritage Park, Meersbrook Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Peace Gardens, Rother Valley Country Park, Tinsley Green, Weston Park, Wheata Woods and the Winter Garden.

The three in Rotherham went to Bradgate Park, Rosehill Victoria Park and Thrybergh Country Park, with Barnsley's Elsecar Park and Cusworth Park in Doncaster also successful.

Sheffield's six Green Pennant Awards went to Devon Gardens, Fretson Green, Grenoside Green, Heeley City Farm, Kettlebridge Doorstep Green and Meersbrook Community Walled Garden.

Phil Barton, from Green Flag, said: "These parks and green spaces provide a 'green lung' for people in towns and cities across the country, but they also provide essential locations for play, family interaction and getting away from it all."
