Protest over privately funded Sheffield 'polyclinic' - AUDIO INTERVIEWS
PEOPLE fighting to keep the NHS public took to the streets last night in protest at plans to a build a large private medical practice in Sheffield.
The rally outside Cutler's Hall was organised to co-incide with a meeting between city GPs and Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Healthcare company - one of the companies interested in running the practice.
Under the "polyclinic" scheme, the Government will set up eight medical centres in the UK which will be run by private firms.
But occupational therapist Jill Chanter said: "My concern is that Virgin want to use the health service as a means of making a profit - I do not think profit and health care go together.
"I think there is a danger that our work is monitored by meeting targets and making money rather than the standard of care for our patients."
