A YOUNG man who battled depression is now forging a successful career with the city’s mental health trust thanks to its apprenticeship scheme.

Daniel Brookes, from Gleadless, used National Apprenticeship Week to promote the benefits of schemes following his positive experiences at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Trust.

The 24-year-old started his apprenticeship as an occupational therapy assistant at SHSC’s 44-bed unit on Forest Close, Oughtibridge, for adults under 65 with mental health problems, in April 2010.

The apprenticeship scheme gives people the chance to learn practical skills and gain recognised qualifications.

Daniel, whose apprenticeship has led to a full-time job at the unit, said: “I would definitely encourage other people to take up an apprenticeship as it’s been a fantastic experience for me and has really helped boost my confidence.”
