The Chancellor’s vision of “A Northern Powerhouse” has lasted just long enough for his party to cross the line at the last general election.
Almost before “the paint has dried”, his Transport Secretary has pulled the Powerhouse plug with the unbelievable announcement that vital rail electrification schemes, the Manchester to York, and the Midland Main Line, are to be put back in favour of his priorities in the South and West. (Nothing new there, then)
For powerhouse we should substitute backwater and patiently wait for these schemes to conveniently reappear on the agenda in just less than five years time.
