Several city centre shops had to close early due to a power cut.

Over ten units along Fargate and in Sheffield city centre had to ask customers to leave at around 4.20pm this afternoon.

Stores including McDonald’s, HMV, New Look, Sainsbury’s, Sports Direct, Co-op, Paperchase, Vision Express, Thomas Cook and River Island were all affected.

Bassline fans were left disappointed as an event staring Jamie Duggan and DJ Q was cancelled. They were hoping to launch their compilation album 'Pure Bassline'.

Drama fans were also left disappointed as the Crucible Theatre cancelled a scheduled show.

A spokesman from the theatre said: “We’re sorry to announce the National Theatres Connections show is cancelled due to power cut in city centre.
