Post Office consultation 'a pretence'

BUSINESS bosses in South Yorkshire have criticised the Post Office refusal to back down over plans to axe branches.

South Yorkshire branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) branded the consultation process a pretence after bosses ignored the views of customers and councillors and pressed ahead with plans to close 15 post offices in the city.

And it claimed the seven-week consultation was a rubber-stamping process rather than a genuine attempt to listen to customers' views.

The Wadsley Bridge post office in Sheffield was the only one to be reprieved.

FSB chairman Tony Cherry said: "Post offices represent the heart of the local economy and the closures will have far wider implications for business communities in areas surrounding the doomed locations than most people expect.

"The FSB has pledged to support the local authorities and communities to look at alternative ways to provide the service, which is – and forever should be – a community service.

"The government is currently pumping billions into the banks on the one hand and closing down vitally important community resources on the other.

"This is one more nail in the coffin of those very same small businesses to which the government is looking to be the salvation of the economy following the credit crunch.

"There just appears to be no semblance of joined-up thinking in the government's business strategy – if indeed they have one."
