HEADLINE - Police search 800 tonnes of soil and rubble in hunt for Ben Needham

Police officers searching for the remains of Ben Needham have sifted through 800 tonnes of soil and rubble.

Detective Inspector Jon Cousins revealed the scale of the operation today as his team moved into the 17th day of the search on the Greek island of Kos.

Ben, from Sheffield, was 21 months old when he vanished while he was playing outside a farmhouse his grandfather was renovating in July 1991.

Detectives are working on the theory that the tot may have been crushed and buried by a digger which was clearing a building plot close to the farmhouse.

Police officers and Greek volunteers have excavated the area around the farmhouse and are now working on a site where the digger moved material from the building plot around the time Ben vanished.

Ben's relatives have always believed he was abducted but have been warned to 'prepare for the worst'.
