Overnight, a crook used a wheelie bin to reach an upstairs window which was forced open.

The offender failed to get into the property in Badger Close, Woodhouse.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Please think carefully about the storage of ladders, garden furniture and dustbins.

"Consider if anyone can easily move these to assist them with climbing onto low walls and canopy roofs.

"Ensure garden tools such as spades, shovels and pick axes are securely stored away to prevent offenders from being able to use these to break into your property."

There was also an attempted burglary of a home in Badger Road, Woodhouse, after a lock was tampered with.

A first floor flat in Norgreave Way, Halfway, was broken into after the front door was forced open and power tools were stolen in a raid of a farm outbuilding in Mosborough.

Garden and hand tools were stolen from a van parked in Meetinghouse Croft, Woodhouse and attempts were made to get into a van in John Calvert Road, Woodhouse.

Officers are also investigating criminal damage to a vehicle after its windows were smashed as it was parked in Badger Close, Woodhouse.
