A pony was put to sleep after he was struck across the head in an attack in Rotherham.

The 28-year-old gelding, called Chester, was attacked after being led from his enclosure at High View Stables in Carr Lane, Carr, between 10pm on Tuesday, September 27 and 8.30am the following day.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "We are seeking witnesses to a fatal attack on a pony in Rotherham.

"The 28 year-old gelding had to be put down after it was struck about the head with a heavy object between 10pm on Tuesday, September 27 and 8.30am on Wednesday, September 28.

"It is believed attackers led the pony from its enclosure at High View Stables in Carr Lane, Carr, before carrying out the attack."
