POLICE in South Yorkshire believe Government cuts of 20 per cent to the service’s budget and a reduction in officer numbers will have a detrimental effect on crime levels and result in the public getting a poorer service, according to a survey.

Ninety-nine per cent of officers in the county who responded said morale has fallen, 88 per cent believed cutting police officer numbers will have a detrimental effect on crime levels and 84 per cent are unhappy about increased workload and 93 per cent believe there will be a decline in service delivery.

Bob Pitt, chair of South Yorkshire Police Federation, warned: “The message from police officers in South Yorkshire is loud and clear.

“They feel they are being hit from all sides by this government’s plans.”
