Police are appealing for help in locating a medal given to a victim’s relative in the first world war.

The Military Cross medal, which was awarded to the victim’s Great Uncle, Captain Joseph Layfield, for leading a charge against a German machine gun bunker, was stolen from the home in Cusworth, Doncaster on Friday, October 4.

The medal has the letters ‘GR’ in the centre of the cross, and is in a blue box similar to the one in the photo. It is possible that Captain Layfield’s name may be on the rear of the medal.

It is believed that a citation for the awarding of the medal, in a rolled cardboard tube, was also taken and is likely to be kept with the medal to increase its value. The offenders allegedly also took a cloth-faced ‘paybook’ issued to Captain Layfield and dated to the same period.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 of call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting incident number 536 of 4 October 2013.
