CALLS have been made by a Sheffield MP to ensure female students are given places at new technical colleges.
Meg Munn, Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley, made the plea to Education Secretary Michael Gove in a Parliamentary debate.
She said: “Engineering and technology have some of the lowest levels of participation among women of all the professions.
“Given that university technical colleges are new institutions that have the chance to ensure more girls take part in these subjects, will Mr Gove set them the aim of ensuring 50 per cent of their entrants are girls?”
Mr Gove said he was ‘always wary of targets and quotas’, but agreed the ‘need to encourage more girls to contemplate a career in design, technology or engineering is strong’.
