Plea as Supertram blocked by cars

FRUSTRATED Supertram bosses today appealed for drivers to think 'outside the box' after services were blocked by cars struggling in the snow.

All 25 trams on routes across the city experienced delays this morning and last night as cars slid about in icy conditions and blocked tracks.

Steep sections of track running on roads were particularly badly hit, including Park Grange Road in Arbourthorne and City Road.

Last night some trams were terminated at Sheffield station and ordered to head back into the city after bosses feared a logjam on the Halfway line.

Other routes were badly hit through sheer volume of traffic and inconsiderate driving on the part of motorists.

A Stagecoach spokesman said trams were snarled up in congestion caused by nose-to-tail motorists halting on junctions, such as on West Street and Netherthorpe Road, Shalesmoor.

He said: "Trams have 16-wheel drive and can cope with any amount of snow. If we had the roads to ourselves we could always run a full service. But there are ways motorists can help by thinking outside the box and leaving junctions clear. If drivers can steer clear of them and makes sure they are not blocking tracks, it all helps.

"All routes were served on Monday night, but with serious delays. We had to turn some trams heading for Halfway back at Sheffield station, otherwise they could all have been stuck. "

Services were very busy as motorists 'wisely' opted to leave their cars at home, he added.
