FRUIT and vegetables are sprouting in allotments and gardens across South Yorkshire - thanks to the county’s cannabis growers.
Fertiliser, pots and other horticultural items seized by police during drugs raids are now being donated to legitimate gardeners.
Instead of destroying the equipment, officers are giving it away to allotment societies as a gesture of goodwill.
Following the latest seizure, staff from Ecclesfield Safer Neighbourhood Team handed its haul to Shirecliffe Allotment Society and Ecclesfield Church Allotment Society.
Sgt Richard Hammond from South Yorkshire Police said: “When we carry our search warrants and discover cannabis set-ups we seize everything used in the production.
“We used to destroy it but now, as long as the equipment is not contaminated, we donate it to community groups such as allotment societies.
“Those we have donated to so far are appreciative because some of it is high value.
“It is our way of giving something back to the community for all the help members of the public give us,” he said.
