PLANS for a new £6 million hotel and restaurant have been rejected by Rotherham Council.

Hospitality chain Whitbred had applied for permission to build an 80-bed Premier Inn and eaterie on Sheffield Road, Templeborough.

The company told councillors the hotel could host more than 8,000 visitors a year, with an annual turnover of £1.4 million for the hotel and restaurant combined.

Whitbred also claimed the money generated could support between 14 and 25 full time jobs, on top of the 60 employed directly by the hotel and restaurant.

But councillors said there were ‘more preferable sites’ for the development, such as near the New York Stadium and on the former Liquid nightclub site on the edge of the town centre.
