Planners to decide over school facelift

COUNCILLORS are set to decide whether to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of Sheffield's King Edward VII Upper School.

The landmark school, opened on Glossop Road, Broomhill in 1838, is one of the 11 schools in Sheffield to survive after the Government cut back its Building Schools for the Future programme earlier this month.

In a 21 million refurbishment school managers want to knock down 1950s and 1960s extensions and build a brand new three-storey block for teaching science, technology, engineering and maths.

They also plan to build a new single-storey learning support unit and a sports hall on the southern end of the site near Clarkehouse Road, as well as upgrading existing tennis courts into a multi-use games area.

Although backed by planning officers, the blueprint has been criticised by the Sheffield Conservation Advisory Group.

The body's report said: "The group felt the scale and the architectural treatment of the scheme as a whole was unsatisfactory.

"The group felt very concerned with the proposed treatment of the roofscape and particularly that there was no proposal for green roofs.

"The group felt the development sought to obtain too much from the available site, which contained one of the most significant buildings within the city."

But Sheffield Council planning officers told councillors in a report the plans demonstrated "an acceptable balance between the needs of the school and the conservation of this important heritage asset".

They have advised councillors to grant planning permission when the city centre, south and east planning board meets on Monday.

Pupils will move into 68 portable cabins on the front lawn for two years while the work is carried out. The Glossop Road buildings were designed by William Flockton.
