COMMUNITIES in South Yorkshire can bid for a share of £2 million to protect and improve sports playing fields.
The lottery cash is being offered by Sport England to enhance existing recreation grounds and create new pitches.
Investments of between £20,000 and £50,000 are on offer, which can be used to bring disused fields back into use or carry out draining and reseeding.
Communities will also be able to buy new land for recreation grounds, or buy fields threatened by building developments.
Successful applicants will have the chance to have their pitch designated as a Queen Elizabeth II field, through a programme to mark the Jubilee and the Olympics.
