DEMOLITION work has begun at a former Sheffield secondary school, with the project due to take three months to complete.

Wisewood School, Rural Lane, closed last summer after it was merged with Myers Grove, with the new Forge Valley Community School opening at Stannington in September.

Work to knock down the school is due to be completed by the end of March, weather permitting.

Although the school is to go, the sports centre on the site will remain for community use.

Maggie Birt, community sport manager, said: “Although there will be some temporary changes over this period, we have been informed car parking will be maintained on the site.”

Plans have been drawn up for a new artificial grass pitch to be constructed on the old school site after the demolition.

Maggie said: “We are hopeful this will be completed and in full operation by the start of the new football season in September.

“We have joined up with two junior football clubs from the Wisewood area who will be using the new facilities to develop and offer new activity to young people in this community.

“The pitch will also be available for bookings and we will announce details as the project develops.”

Planning permission for the pitch has yet to be granted.
