POLICE are stepping up patrols after five homes were targeted by thieves who made off with copper gas piping.
The latest incident happened at around 6am yesterday, when a woman living on South Crescent, Bolsover, woke to find her boiler had stopped working.
When she looked outside, she found the gas meter had been turned off and a length of copper piping had been stolen.
Similar incidents happened overnight between last Friday and Saturday at houses on North View Street and Sherwood Street in Bolsover.
Pipes have also been cut, but not stolen, outside two properties on Cundy Road.
Community Safety Inspector Russ Dakin said: “Not only is this a huge inconvenience in terms of the cost of repairs but it could also be extremely dangerous. Residents are also being left without heating while they await repairs at a cold time of the year.”
Witnesses or anyone with information about the thefts should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
