PLAYERS with the City of Sheffield Pipe Band will attend a Dedication of Standards service at Sheffield Cathedral on Thursday, June 30.

The pipers will be joined by drummers in front of the Town Hall for a presentation ceremony at 7pm. The band will then form a parade and make their way to the Cathedral almost exactly 95 years to the hour that the Sheffield Pals marched prior to the Somme Offensive in 1916. The Pals suffered heavy losses in battle the following morning.

Following the service members of the band and their families will make their way to The Grapes pub in Trippet Lane at around 8pm.

The band also played outside the Royal Hallamshire Hospital last Sunday, when they bade a fond farewell to long-serving member Gavin Nicol who is moving to Scotland due to ill health. A spokesman said: “Gavin will be greatly missed.”
