A redesigning of Charter Square will replace the roundabout and associated subways with a single road and a pedestrianised area featuring cafes.

The council is hoping the new work will 'enhance the current environment', with a new cycle path and pavement on Charter Square.

The new building is set to be completed by early 2019.

The second phase of development will see buildings Barkers Pool being demolished, and the construction of units including a new multi-storey car park and department store.

A planning application for the second phase has yet to be submitted.
