Revellers in Sheffield have another excuse to head out after payday - after a city bar was hailed as one of the best places to drink in the country.

Picture House Social on Abbeydale Road - which serves up cocktails, craft beer, ping pong and authentic Italian street food - was a runner up in the prestigious Observer Food Monthly awards.

The bar is in the basement of the iconic Abbeydale Picture House and is a venture from James O’Hara, who co-founded The Great Gatsby on Division Street.

It was one of only two venues in the north of England to get a mention in the awards, with Friends of Ham in Leeds also triumphing. on Crpo

Meanwhile, Beanies Wholefoods on Crookes Valley Road won the best independent retailer prize.

James said: “These are probably the most prestigious food awards in the country in terms of how they’re viewed in the industry, and to get a couple of Sheffield places in there is extremely rare and bloody great!”
