Eco-friendly Sheffield motorist Phil Vintin is counting the cash he has saved after switching to a vehicle powered by green fuel LPG – liquified petroleum gas.
Phil switched to a second-hand 2003 Vauxhall Astra Dialfuel several years ago, a car which already had 73,000 miles on the clock.
Thanks to his job as a mobile IT engineer working in schools all over England and Wales, Phil has been racking up the miles ever since.
Now the Astra has covered 215,000 miles – and counting.
As a result, Phil has saved about £5,000 compared to filling with unleaded petrol.
Phil said: “I hadn’t started this job and was trying to be green at the time I bought the car.
“Once I started driving for work I saved a lot – the car costs me about 12p a mile to run and I’m paid 35p a mile.
“Because LPG is almost half the price of petrol or diesel it costs me less to run the car than my colleagues with diesels.
“The low price of LPG is a big benefit, and it’s also better for the environment so really do I feel like I’m doing my bit.”
Despite its high mileage, Phil’s Astra has never required any attention other than routine servicing and minor repairs.
