Pete's experience on 'front line'

HE'S used to real-life emergencies on the streets of South Yorkshire – but how would he cope on the battlefield?

That was the test faced by ambulance service clinical team leader Pete Waller, from Rotherham, when he took part in an event organised by the Army.

The 45-year-old worker was one of 85 people from 25 businesses and organisations around the region who attended Exercise Executive Stretch.

A mass casualty exercise took place at Catterick, North Yorkshire, and was billed as a "unique course in leadership, management and team building".

Pete said: "It was a situation where an explosion had apparently gone off, leaving a lot of soldiers injured and in a few cases without limbs. Later, you realise they are amputees that are playing a role, but it is so realistic. Even working for the Ambulance Service I haven't seen a scenario quite like this."

Pete also had to help organise a mock rescue of a Government minister, paddle across a lake on a makeshift raft, live on rations, and sleep out.
