A PENSIONER has died after collapsing at the wheel of his car on the M1 in South Yorkshire, causing the vehicle to crash.
The 77-year-old man, who was travelling to Tamworth, collapsed at the wheel of his blue Nissan Almera Tino car near junction 33, at Catcliffe.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The collapse led him to press down the accelerator and the car hit the nearside crash barrier, his female passenger then put on the hand brake.
“The car slid across the carriageway, hit the central barrier, overturned then came to rest.
“The man, from Liversedge, West Yorkshire sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Rotherham District General Hospital.
“His 72-year-old female passenger, also from Liversedge suffered slight bruising and was treated in the same hospital but was not kept in.”
The M1 was closed for several hours after the incident.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the manner of driving prior to it to call 101 quoting incident number 356 of December 29.
