A PENSIONER rescued from her house by firefighters after passing police officers spotted smoke has died.
The 69-year-old, who has not yet been named, was found in her home on Castleton Road, Hope, by fire crews who entered her smoke-filled property after police officers raised the alarm.
Police spotted smoke coming from the property as they drove past at 11.30am on Sunday and called for firefighters and paramedics.
Fire crews found the woman inside and she was taken to hospital, but later died.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way but a fire service spokesman said it is thought to have been smoking related.
Firefighters spent yesterday promoting fire safety in Hope, urging people to have a working smoke alarm on each floor and to test them weekly.
