A SPORTS car driver aged 77 is in hospital in a life-threatening condition after falling under the wheels of his own Alfa Romeo when it rolled away on a Sheffield road.
The man suffered serious injuries including broken bones on Baslow Road in Totley when he tried to stop the parked car moving.
He had parked his car, a grey Alfa Romeo 156, opposite the Co-op at around 10am on Thursday.
The man got out of the vehicle, then noticed it was starting to roll away.
It is believed he tried to stop the car moving, but fell underneath it. The car came to rest against the central reservation.
A worker at a nearby hair salon, who didn’t want to be named, said she saw the man lying in the road.
“From what I gather he had parked his car, left the handbrake off, and tried to put it back on again,” she said.
The driver sustained a broken hip, ribs and left arm and was taken to the Northern General Hospital for treatment.
South Yorkshire Police said he was in a ‘life-threatening condition’.
Baslow Road was closed in both directions for a 50-yard stretch at the junction with The Crescent. A diversion was also put in place for local buses.
